SPMs are natural lipid mediators that play a crucial role in resolving inflammation. They don't block the initial phase of inflammation, which is a necessary response to injury or illness. After the immune response has served its purpose, SPMs down-regulate the process to resolve the inflammation. Produced in the affected area, SPMs act as resolution agonists targeting immune cells that mediate the inflammatory response. By binding to specific receptors on cells, particularly protein-coupled receptors, SPMs modify cell behavior to promote resolution.
