Homocysteine is an amino acid typically broken down by folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12. Elevated homocysteine levels increase the risk for CVD (cardiovascular disease). It is lowered by increasing folate to help recycle homocysteine. Increasing folate intake via food or supplementation (e.g. multivitamin) can be helpful in lowering homocysteine levels.
